You may not think about them often, but seat belt retractors are critical for providing motor vehicle passengers with a safe and secure ride. They can keep car seats locked in position, and can adjust to help passengers of all sizes be safe and comfortable when they ride. However, seat belt retractors can sometimes lock in the wrong position, or be accidentally switched into a mode that either tightens or loosens the belt. This can cause safety and comfort issues for all passengers. As a result, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are seeking a device that is a redesign of the seat belt assembly and locking mechanism that addresses these issues and could be installed by automotive manufacturers. Tool was selected through a competitive process as the sole awardee, and looks forward to addressing this important safety issue!
